Estimating the rate of exposure of the Quebec population to bats for the Institut national de santé publique du Québec

The Institut national de santé publique is increasingly concerned with infectious diseases such as rabies, a virus which can be transmitted by mammals such as the bat. In order to better direct efforts to prevent transmission of the virus, an estimate had to be made of the frequency of exposure of the Quebec population to bats (3% of the Quebec population had come into contact with a bat), as well as the ratio of contacts reported to a regional public health authority and treated with a post-exposure prophylaxis. We had to draw a proportionate sample guaranteeing representation of the various regions of Quebec (17 in all, excluding Nunavik) according to the demographical weight of each region. The study was administered in French and in English in the form of a parent questionnaire and a child questionnaire.
